Local product Chad Posthumus became the first member of the Winnipeg Sea Bears of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

“An absolute honour,” Posthumus said in a team statement. “Being able to play professional basketball in my hometown, in front of all my family, friends and supporters is a dream come true.”

The 6-foot-11 forward played the last two seasons with the Ottawa BlackJacks. He helped Saskatchewan win the first CEBL championship in 2019.

The River East Collegiate grad has been in the pro ranks for seven years, also playing in Japan and Argentina.

“A perfect fit for our club,” Sea Bears president Jason Smith called Posthumus.

The team opens its inaugural season on May 27, at home against the Vancouver Bandits.
