KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas City Monarchs scored five times in the opening inning en route to a 14-2 romp over the Winnipeg Goldeyes at Legends Field Tuesday evening.

Left fielder Odubel Herrera led off the bottom of the first with a home run to right field and it was a sign of things to come for Goldeyes starter Luis Ramirez. Before the inning was over, Kansas City had a 5-0 lead after a two-run double off the left field wall by right fielder Micker Adolfo and a two-run single to right-centre by centre fielder Jacob Robson.

After the Goldeyes got one back in the top of the second on a solo shot to left by catcher Chris Burgess, the Monarchs continued their offensive onslaught in their half of the inning, adding three more runs to take an 8-1 lead. Second baseman Justin Wylie led off the frame with a homer to left, which was followed by run-scoring singles to centre by Adolfo and Robson.

Kansas City added single runs in the third and fourth innings on first baseman Brian O’Grady’s sacrifice fly to right field and Herrera’s RBI ground out to second base.

The Monarchs hit a pair of two-run home runs in the seventh — by catcher Chris Herrmann and Adolfo — to make it 14-1.

Winnipeg closed out the scoring in the top of the eighth inning when third baseman Keith Torres singled up the middle to bring home left fielder Najee Gaskins.

Dalton Moats (W, 4-3) started for Kansas City and worked six innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out four and walking one.

Ramirez (L, 5-5) lasted just three innings and allowed a career-high nine runs — all earned — on nine hits. He struck out three and walked four.
