HAL'S HEADLINES: Manitoba NDP pulls political switcheroo

Article content

The leader of the province’s NDP made a number of fiscal promises on Wednesday that raised some eyebrows. If elected premier, Wab Kinew says his New Democrats will balance Manitoba’s budget in their first term. What happened to the speNDP?! Kinew also promised not to raise the PST and to continue with a couple tax breaks brought in by the governing Progressive Conservatives. It’s a bold political move by a party known for its tax and spend ways. Will they be seen as hollow promises? Or is it possible usual PC voters might now give the New Democrats a look? Only time will tell. But for me, this campaign just got compelling. Please pass the popcorn, it’s going to be an interesting couple of months.

VANDALS AT IT AGAIN

The vandalism continues. And it’s not the first time for Ravi Ramberran who owns three restaurants in Winnipeg. Several large windows were smashed early Monday morning at his Four Crowns beer vendor on McPhillips. The damage could top $20,000! Ravi has the culprits on security video but even if they’re caught, will they ever do time for the crime and will they have to pay restitution. Ravi doubts it…me too. As Ravi puts it, “We don’t need a six month plan, we don’t need a year plan, we need a today plan. The excuses and BS have to stop. We’re so tired of spending our family’s money on protecting us and our staff.”

HOW MANY PILLOWS?

How many pillows is too many? It can make or break a good night’s sleep. Experts almost unanimously agree you should only sleep on one pillow at night. More than one can seriously disrupt your sleep and cause long-lasting neck and back pain. Certified sleep science coach Jill Zwarensteyn says, “One pillow under the head should be enough but it needs to be the right one. The goal of a pillow is to align the neck with the rest of the spine to create a good sleeping posture and prevent neck strain.” Sweet dreams!

GOLFING & SKIN CANCER

A-quarter of golfers have had skin cancer. That according to a new study out of Australia. The research also found that golfers have a 250% higher risk of developing the disease when compared to non-golfers. Don’t stop golfing, just make sure you’re slathering on lots of sunscreen.

NIGHTINGALE POO FACIAL

If you’ve seen the new Mission Impossible movie (it’s great!), you might be wondering how Tom Cruise looks so damn good at 61. Well, it turns out he may have a new skincare secret. A source close to the star is quoted as saying, “Tom recently started experimenting with the nightingale poo facial.” The source also says, “He doesn’t go in for Botox or surgery but he does pay close attention to all the new and popular natural treatments.” Whatever you’re doing, Tom, it’s working!

BARBIE BOO-BOO

A Massachusetts mother who hired a Barbie impersonator for her five-year-old daughter’s birthday in the 1990’s turned bright pink when she realized the woman was actually a stripper. In a now-viral TikTok video, Julia Duggan, now a 32-year-old pharmacist, says, “My mom made an innocent mistake. The woman played along. She did not take off her clothes. I was thrilled to have Barbie at my party.” I’m sure the kids’ moms and dads had a good laugh about it…
