The province has unveiled the 30-person team that will make up the Student Advisory Council to assist in informing the education overhaul.
Education Minister Cliff Cullen said in a press conference on Wednesday there were about 200 applicants from all corners of the province to be part of the council. He said diversity was a priority in putting this panel together to ensure all communities have a voice at the table.
“We embarked on the K-12 review for a purpose and the purpose is about improving student success,” said Cullen. “I think it’s critical we engage with students on that to make sure that we fully appreciate what they need and what they are trying to accomplish.”
The council includes students from Grade 9-12 and they will meet four times over the next 12 months.
The minister said this will help them better address the recommendations of the Better Education Starts Today strategy.
The province has been facing blowback for Bill 64 (The Education Modernization Act) as not addressing the recommendations which were derived through extensive consultations. Bill 64 is just one part of the education overhaul and deals with governance. Other initiatives, including a full curriculum review, will have greater impacts on the classroom and address these recommendations, which also include poverty in the classroom, diversity and Indigenous issues.
