Restoration of St. James Optimist Park being planned

The city looks set to devote more than $900,000 to restore the St. James Optimist Park.
A public service report calls on council to fund the project from a $1.79-million expropriation settlement from the province for CentrePort Canada Way’s construction.
If that plan is approved, the project will be added to this year’s capital budget and the city’s public service will hire a consultant to plan and administer the restoration.
Back in 2010, the province expropriated 41.4 acres of city land near Summit Road to construct CentrePort Canada Way, which prevented use of the park. The settlement’s value includes 9.17 acres of land the province will transfer back to Winnipeg.
The report will head to council’s community services and parks committee for its first civic vote on June 26 and also requires council approval.
