“As a hockey mom, I’m oftentimes in each and every ward of the city participating in sports,” said Coun. Sherri Rollins (Fort Rouge-East Fort Garry) in a press conference at the Lord Roberts Community Centre on Thursday. “The point that really needs emphasizing is just how essential community centres are and have become in our lives over the last two years. And I know from the calls of this board of Lord Roberts Community Centre how deeply your hearts were attending to the needs of this community, the neighbourhood, the children, and really people of all ages.”

In a statement, the City said the CCRGP received 14 applications requesting a total of $1,119,389.93, during the fall 2021 intake period. Nine applications totaling $702,192.39 were approved. The program ensures City-owned, board-run community centres can obtain the help needed to carry out facility repairs, upgrades, retrofits, safety improvements, and renovations.
“Over the course of the last 20 months, the global pandemic has really underscored just how important and valuable community centres are for our physical and mental wellbeing, as well as for the wellbeing of our community,” said Mayor Brian Bowman on Thursday. “As our population grows, and as the need grows for new recreation and community centre facilities, the Community Centre Renovation Grant Program ensures that upgrades are possible to support our existing community centre assets across Winnipeg.”
