Trio of fires damage Winnipeg residences Tuesday morning

One person was taken to hospital in critical condition after fire broke out in a West End apartment building, one of a trio of structure fires crews battled on Tuesday morning.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service personnel saw smoke in the building when they arrived at the Adanac Apartments at 737 Sargent Avenue just after 9 a.m. They searched the three-storey block and helped some residents evacuate, the city said in a release. Paramedics transported one person to hospital in critical condition.

The fire was brought under control within an hour from within the building, the release said. The cause is under investigation and no damage estimates were available.

A vacant, one-storey home in the 400 block of Stella Avenue was demolished Tuesday after a fire at 6:44 a.m. Crews arrived to see heavy black smoke and flames from the house, and attacked from the outside with aerial ladders due to structural instability, the release said.

The house suffered extensive damage and posed a safety risk, the city said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The WFPS also responded to an apparent electrical fire Tuesday at 9:56 a.m., at a home being built in the 300 block of Ferry Road.

It was under control within an hour. There were no injuries and no damage estimate was available.
