A 34-year-old man is in hospital in critical condition after he was stabbed following an altercation early Sunday morning.

Police said they found the man in the 600 block of Portage Avenue at about 6:30 a.m., with a serious upper-body injury requiring immediate emergency first aid.

They said the victim and another male he didn’t know got into a physical altercation. The suspect pulled a knife, stabbed the 34-year-old and walked away, while the victim collapsed and was assisted by a passer-by.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Winnipeg man on Monday and charged him with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon. He was detained in custody.
