Shootings send youth to hospital with gunshot wounds: PoliceBack to video
Winnipeg Police were first called at around 7 p.m., with General Patrol officers and Tactical Support Team (TST) members responding. Police said they became aware of at least two groups of people who had been confronted by multiple individuals in a white van and shot at by a handgun.
In the first incident which occurred in the area of William Avenue and Kate Street near Hugh John Macdonald School in the Centennial neighbourhood, police said words were exchanged before two victims were shot at and possibly pursued by the people in the van.
Shortly after, there were three victims in the second incident at King Street and James Avenue where after a brief verbal exchange, a male from the vehicle produced a firearm and discharged it, striking a male youth, police said. He was rushed to hospital in stable condition and later upgraded to stable.

Police tape was still visible at the scene at King and James on Tuesday.
“Our investigation obviously went from zero to a 100 very quickly,” said police spokesperson Const. Jason Michalyshen at a press briefing Tuesday. “We had a number of police resources dispatched. My understanding is we had the first cruiser car there within two minutes.”
At around 8 p.m., officers located the van abandoned in the 400 block of Toronto Street. TST members located and arrested a female and male youth possessing a firearm in the same area. Both remain in police custody and are facing charges.
“We’re thankful that we’re not talking about a homicide,” said Michalyshen. “We’re thankful we have two people and potentially more will be in custody. The investigation is still unfolding. We’re still conducting interviews and members of our Major Crimes Unit are actively involved.”

Police would not speculate on a possible motive but believe that the attacks were random. They don’t believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.
“Based on the information we have right now, the young people that we have in custody may or may not be somehow associated to the gang or drug culture to some extent,” said Michalyshen. “We’re seeing individuals make poor choices when they are engaged in that sort of high-risk lifestyle.”
