A 23-year-old Winnipeg man has been charged with second-degree murder after being arrested in connection with series of stabbings as well as the death of a yet-to-be-identified man last week.
Winnipeg Police were called Tuesday evening by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service members on an unrelated call after they found a male stabbing victim near Sargent Avenue and Furby Street.
A 31-year-old male victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition suffering from upper-body injuries sustained from a stabbing. Police said he refused to cooperate with investigators and did not request further police involvement. He was later upgraded to stable condition.
General Patrol officers identified and attended to an involved residence in the 500 block of Furby Street, where police said officers arrested a male suspect in a common hallway after a brief use-of-force encounter.
Officers subsequently learned the male was also suspected of an earlier stabbing last Wednesday in the 100 block of Henry Avenue. A 51-year-old man suffered upper-body injuries and was rushed to hospital in unstable condition and later upgraded to stable.
The following day, the Homicide Unit began investigating the suspicious death of a yet-to-be-identified male located in the South Point Douglas neighbourhood. The victim’s body was found after police and WFPS members were called to a suspicious fire. Police said Friday they have not determined the cause of death of the victim pending the results of an autopsy.
On Wednesday, Homicide Unit Investigators placed the suspect under arrest as he was in custody for the stabbing incidents.
In addition to the second-degree murder charge, he has been charged with assault causing bodily harm, assaulting a police officer, carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with condition of undertaking. He remains in custody.
The Homicide Unit continues the investigation and is requesting public assistance in identifying the deceased male. He is described as: about six-feet in heights with unknown ethnicity, no upper teeth, and had undergone previous medical facial procedure.
Anyone with information or residential/commercial video surveillance footage that may assist homicide investigators is asked to call 204-986-6508 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
