Former Winnipeg police chief Jack Ewatski has reportedly resigned from his job as Trinidad and Tobago’s deputy police commissioner.

The Trinidad Express reported that nation’s prime minister, Kamla Persad-Bissessar, announced Monday Ewatski and his boss, police commissioner Dwayne Gibbs, both tendered their resignations, effective Aug. 7.

The men, both of whom are Canadian, were hired to take over the small nation’s police force two years ago. Since then, they’ve both been repeatedly criticized for the country’s “spiralling murder rate,” the Express reported.

Ewatski was Winnipeg’s police chief from 1998 to 2007.
