Goldeyes fantastic fun for all

Article content

The boys of summer are officially back.

Major League Baseball kicked off its regular season the other day, which to me is the unofficial start to summer.

Better yet, the Winnipeg Goldeyes are prepping for their 19th season, which will launch its exhibition season in less than a month. For the 300,000-plus who caught a game last season, I don’t have to tell you how much fun taking in a ball game can be and sitting in a fantastic facility like Shaw Park makes it even better.

The smell of fresh popcorn and cold beer when you walk in the park, sun beating down on a weekday afternoon while relaxing on the first-base line — it’s no wonder the game has been an inspiration for so many writers over the years. Sure, it’s not as big of a sport in Canada, yet you’d never know it as the Goldeyes manage to set attendance goals and records year after year.

The Goldeyes are often looked at as the little brother to the Jets and Bombers, but if you keep your head on a swivel this summer, you’ll see more Goldeyes gear around town than you think.

The attendance for the Fish is actually quite impressive when you do the math. Consider this: the Jets, after 41 regular season home games, had just over 600,000 fans this season and the Bombers, with 33,000 seats in the new stadium, and nine regular season home games, will have just under 300,000 fans this season.

And the Goldeyes? Well, with 50 regular season games, if they keep up their 7,000-per-game average, Shaw Park will have more than 350,000 seats filled this season.

I’ve always appreciated the lengths the Goldeyes staff go to make the game a great atmosphere for families and groups alike. They do a great job of making it affordable for everyone.

Do yourself a favour and look into some mini-packs for this season. Or if you really want to get involved and get a sweet summer gig, they’re holding their job fair on Tuesday for fan services and bevy chuckers.

To get in the mood, start humming “Take me out to the ball game” in your head. It’ll help pass the time before the season starts.

Catch Wheeler in the Morning with Philly and Rena weekdays on Power 97.
